Things I don't understand

Source

1. Video games. Why anyone chooses to spend hours yelling at a computer screen while shooting at things is totally beyond me. I'll admit I was totally into the original Mario games and Sonic the Hedgehog, but ever since games went all 3D back in the late 90s, they've been way beyond my nerd abilities. So basically anything past the Super Nintendo is out.

2. Jersey Shore. There is so much to say about how awful this show is. It's not even awful in a good way that makes me want to watch it. It's awful in a way that makes me question society and people's life decisions. The nicknames, the outfits, the personalities, the way the men treat women and the women treat men. It's all wrong. The fact that it exists and has a loyal following hurts my brain.

3. Spicy food. In my world, eating anything beyond a medium salsa is just asking for tears and endless misery. So I just don't understand why someone would make a delicious dinner and then ruin it by adding hot sauce? Where's the satisfaction in that? Did they not want to taste the food? Then why not save time and just douse celery in hot sauce?

4. Littering. Now this one really pisses me off. The other things on this list are avoidable. I don't have to play video games, watch Jersey Shore or eat spicy food, but I do have to see litter and it does have the ability to ruin my day. First of all, it's totally unnecessary. If you brought your garbage with you, then you are damn well capable of taking it to a trash can. And second of all, it's just straight-up irresponsible and inconsiderate. So pick up after yourself, won't you? It's the right thing to do, and you don't want me to catch you doing otherwise. I'm not above scolding you in public.

5. People who complain about a blog, yet continue to frequent it. Hey you, if you don't like what you're seeing, don't look, don't comment and definitely don't write an entire blog post about your hate for another blogger. That just makes you look petty, jealous and rude. A blog is a person's own space to post what they want. They don't need to conform to what you like, so quit being a douche and just read the blogs that make you happy.

6. People who don't like Brussel sprouts. In my family we call them green balls and they are a staple at any turkey dinner. They're so delicious with a forkful of stuffing and turkey. Yum! I think most people have just been saying they don't like green balls since childhood and they're just too stubborn to try them again. So now they're missing out on a delicious and nutritious vegetable that could spice up their usual routine. Try one, I dare you!

7. Nail polish. It chips and once chipped it looks tacky and cheap. So why spend an hour making your nail polish look perfect when you know you'll only have one solid day of wear? Seems like a ginormous waste of time to me.

Anywho, that's my non-exhaustive list of things I don't understand.

What would you put on your list?

  1. I love that you put this list out into the blogosphere even though I'm sure you're aware that there a lots of people out there who will disagree with you. Especially since nail polish is such a fad right now. Yay you! I have to say, that spicy food, is obviously about personal taste, IMO it does not ruin the flavor it enhances it, depending on the level of heat. I did try a green ball, last christmas, and I still don't like them, but I'm open to trying them again, I think I just need to find the right recipe. Nail polish, I love/hate it. I love the looks, but totally agree, that it doesn't last, therefore becomes a waste of time. Jersey Shore- never seen it, never will. I question society daily.

    1. If you're gonna give the green balls another go, I recommend some lemon juice and fresh bacon bits. Yum!

Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment Nettie. I hope to see you around again soon.

Do let me know how the Brussels go down next time! ;)

  2. I agree with you on video games (unless they're old school or party kind of games, but I hate the likes of Modern Warfare), nail polish (though I wear it on my toes!), and littering. I dig spicy food, if it isn't mouth-scorchingly hot, and I've never eaten a Brussels sprout!

I'll have to think of my own list -- mind if I blog it? :)

    1. Definitely blog it! I would love to see what you come up with.

Also, eat a damn Brussels sprout would you!? You have no idea what you're missing.

  3. I agree with everything except for the Brussel Sprouts and Nail Polish. I FINALLY stopped biting my nails after 20 something years and part of my way to quit was by keeping them pretty :D

    1. Holy Heather! Good work on the nails. I'm still guilty of nail biting. I just can't stop. Nail polish doesn't work. That gross tasting nail stuff doesn't work. Nothing works. I'm just stuck in my gross, gross ways.

  4. I often find myself saying "I just don't understand that" when it comes to many things. Makeup, shopping malls, brand name anything. Jersey Shore would definitely make that list, as well as every other "reality TV" program out there. Littering, check. Playing games on Facebook. People who walk around in the company of other people with their damn headphones on, carrying their phone like it's precious cargo. It's a long list...

    I do love brussel sprouts!

    1. Playing games on FB, good one. I'm also with you on the headphones. I have to admit that I'm addicted to my Blackberry so sometimes it might look like I'm carrying around precious cargo. I'm trying to put it my purse more often now, though. It's a gross habit.

Thanks for commenting, Lisa. Come back again soon, won't you?

  5. Brilliant post! I don't understand video games either, although I love Mario!!

Funnily enough, I loved sprouts as a kid but went off them as I got older.

I'm another person who is terrible at nail varnish!

    1. Well aren't you a weirdo. ;) I've never heard of someone liking a Brussels sprout as a kid and then hating them as they got older.

Thanks for popping by, Becky! It's always great to have you.

  6. I loved this post, and I agree with all of these, except nail polish to a degree - two coats of polish on my toes lasts me two weeks and de-uglifies my feet, but I don't do fingernail polish - and VIDEO GAMES! I almost had to write an entire blog post devoted to insulting your character and the content of your blog. ;)

    1. This comment made me laugh out loud. Thanks for that, Tricia.

To each their own. This list is mine and mine alone. I take full responsibility for being a luddite who can't handle a controller with more than four buttons and a joystick.

  7. i knew there was a reason we had an instant connection! we hate the same things haha.

    2. jersey shore- i don't have cable (or any tv programming for that matter - not even basic cable- we just have netflix.) i would over hear people talking about jersey shore and had NO clue what they were talking about, i had to google it. i have never seen an episode, will never see an episode and that is 100% ok in my book. people "drop" these people's names around like they know the cast - i've only heard the name "snooky" and unfortunately have seen a picture of this fine specimen of a human (please note the sarcasm) seeing that picture hurt my brain. no idea how people could get involved in watching that show.

    3. spicy food- i will never, ever eat it. no reason needed other than its hot and why on earth would you want to eat something that causes physical pain?

    4. don't even get me started on littering. have you watched "bag it" yet? if not- go do so. it will make you even more angry!

    7. nail polish - ive never been a "girlie" girl and never wanted to paint my nails. i used to paint my toe nails .. but i'm too lazy ..plus i hate long nails i keep mine very short and just natural. my gramma is probably rolling her eyes and wanting to come after me with her nail file (she used to push back my cuticles and file my nails every time i would visit her. now that was some serious pain for a 5 year old!

    1. I honestly look forward to your comments every time I post. You are my blog hero. I LOVE that you haven't seen Jersey Shore, but you know better than to waste your time watching it.

I haven't seen Bag It yet, but I'm on it!

  8. I adore the one about spicy food... mild salsa is my upper limit, anything above that and my tongue feels swollen and my face neck and chest turns red.... plus when things are spicy that's all you can taste...I'd rather enjoy my food

    Love your blog!

  9. Yes to so many of these things. I'm from Jersey so I have a personal vendetta against Jersey Shore. People already thought it was the armpit of America... it didn't need Jersey Shore to happen. Nail polish? I have always wondered why? Any way I think about it, it doesn't make sense. Don't even get me started on fake nails.

    1. Eww. Fake nails. I'm with you on that one.

  10. Yay! Someone else who likes brussel-sprouts!

I never really wore much nail polish save my "goth phase" in high school, and then the chipping was somehow "cool", but other than that no. I was very serious about ballet most of my life and we weren't allowed to wear it in class (which was every day of the week) so I just never saw the point of it

  11. We are totally on the same page with all of these! I haven't enjoyed video games since the original Mario's either- unless you count Words with Friends... I admire everyone's pretty nails but I don't have the patience for more than just a basic color. And I end up rocking the chipped look for way too long :)

  12. Just love this post. It's funny because I partake in some of these things so it's weird being on the other end. xD

    2. I have a confession to make... Yes, I used to watch Jershey Shore. I know, I know. I'd watch it for a good laugh or self-esteem boost. But I do regret filling my head with fist-pumping and hair gel, so it's a hard confession to make.

    3. Just as brussel sprouts as a staple at your dinner table, hot sauce is in mine! My mom will put hot sauce even on fish and rice! It's something we're all used to tasting and having; I honestly can't go without it. It adds a zesty flavor to otherwise tasteless foods. This might sound masochistic but I enjoy the burn, too. Haha.

    4. I agree! SO much! Litter can ruin my day also. It looks so ugly and downgrades the city you live in. Why trash your neighborhood? Do you trash your house? I sure hope not!

    5. YES. I don't understand this either. You're ruining your day by filling it up with hate and bitterness, why? Not everyone in the world will live by your standards. Gosh, move on~

    6. I've never tried them. In my life. So I couldn't say if I like them or not. Next shopping trip, to the veggie aisle!

    7. I can go as far as saying that I'm OBSESSED with nail polish. To prevent chips, I'll literally change the polish every 3 days. {Crazy, yea.} Painting your nails is like the ultimate in pampering for me. I also really like the creativity behind nail art. It's like mini art! Lol. Though I'll be honest, it is time-consuming so I haven't been able to fix my nails up in a looong time. </3

  13. 5. Doesn't this go against your entire plee for less cats?

    7. Nail polish, when done correctly, can last for days. It's also pretty and makes you feel special.

    - I realize I sound like a total B. But I do love brussel sprouts, everyone on Jersey Shore should swim with the fishes, littering is heartbreaking, and spicy foods are cruel. So I'm not a total B! I hope...

    1. I don't think it goes against my cat post. That post was poking fun, it wasn't hateful. And within that post I admit that I have no right to tell a blogger what to post and what not to post.

Also, I don't think you're a B, at all. This post was meant to cause a little debate. I don't want everyone to agree with me all the time. What fun would that be? :)

  14. I don't understand the video game one either. But that doesn't stop me from playing lego batman for 3 hours in one sitting...

  15. Your list is PERFECT. I 100% agree with each item on there and would expand to include rude strangers. Just the other day I got plowed down in the grocery store and the man just looked at me on the ground and walked away. What a jerk! Who does that?

  16. This post amused me!
I couldn't agree more with no.2. In Britain we have The only way is Essex, Made in Chelsea, Geordie shore, etc etc. Yuck. It celebrates the worst examples and encourages kids to want to emulate them = oh no, what's going to happen to society?!
And re: no 1 - I'm glad I'm not the only person who would much rather have crash bandicoot / sonic with an early 90s console than all this modern stuff. I need simple up, down, right, left, jump controls!
